Affirmation: Skin Care is Everyone Care

For the culture -
Ayurvedic skincare decoded

Ayurveda has become the “it-girl” element of skincare lately it seems, but we’re here to share the real story behind this 5,000-year-old highly regarded, natural system of medicine and why it works.

Ayurveda, which translates to “the science of life” is an age-old, Indian approach to wellness that encourages natural therapies and practices (and in the case of skincare, ingredients) to maintain balance between the mind, body, soul and environment. This interconnectedness is the foundation of Ayurveda and the heart of indē wild. And when combined with modern dermatology, its healing, rejuvenating, and restorative powers are elevated further – that skin magic is a little something we’ve coined Ayurvedistry.

It is believed that there is a direct relationship between the body’s constitution (prakriti) and life forces (doshas). Taking that a step further, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of balancing one’s doshas in order to maintain healthy, glowing skin. Intrigued? We are too. Keep reading as we explore skincare regimens for doshas.

Doshas – which fall into 1 of 3 categories, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha – are energy principles or elements that are based on physical, mental, emotional and behavioral characteristics. Let’s focus on the physical attributes to help you personalize your skin routine!

Vata Dosha

Vata is comprised of air and space. Vata skin is generally on the dryer, thinner side and can appear uneven in tone. Skin Imbalances can cause dark circles, pigmentation and early signs of fine lines and wrinkles as the skin is prone to dehydration and often flakiness.

In order to balance Vata skin, hydration is a must and starts with washing your face with a gentle, highly moisturizing cleanser. In a circular motion, wash away the world’s stressors. Follow with an alcohol-free toner or simply use rose water. Reintroduce moisturize first thing in the morning by using our AM Sunrise Glow Serum, softly messaging and pressing it into your skin using your fingers. Ingredients like Vitamin E, Ferulic Acid, Hyaluronic Acid and Niacinamide, which share the spotlight in our serum, will help fight signs of hyperpigmentation, irritation, and fine lines while quenching your skin’s thirst for moisture. At night, take advantage of the hydrating, firming properties from Squalane and Tripeptide Complex in our PM Sunset Restore Serum

Pitta Dosha

Pitta comprises of fire and water. Pitta skin type is described as medium to thick, sensitive, oily and prone to acne, freckles, rashes and discoloration. This skin type yearns for protection from the sun in order to stay balanced. Thus, skincare routines for Pitta skin should consist of cooling and calming ingredients whilst avoiding tanning and harsh ingredients or cosmetics. Instead, opt for fragrance-free, vegan products that restore the skin.

Ingredients such as Amla, Saffron, Rosehip Oil and Bakuchiol that are found in our PM Sunset Restore Serum can be particularly hydrating and soothing. Before bedtime, as part of your night time regime, apply a few drops to cleansed, dry skin, massaging it into your skin. Then sit back, relax and let the serum get to work while you sleep.

Our AM Sunrise Glow Serum takes the day shift when you wake and get ready for the day, also including Pitta-friendly ingredients such as Ashwagandha, Turmeric, Vitamin E and Bisabolol. They work in perfect harmony to balance the skin by reducing inflammation and redness, treating acne, and moisturizing the skin for soft, supple, glowing results.

Attention ALL dosha skin types --- do not forget your SPF!

Kapha Dosha

Kapha comprises of water and earth. Kapha Skin is said to be thick and heirs on the side of oily. This skin type can be prone to blackheads and acne. Avoid overly drying your skin as it could cause a rebound oily effect.

In order to balance your Kapha, we recommend deeply cleansing your face at least two times a day. Use hydrating face masks and gently exfoliate your skin regularly to rid the skin of any toxins or environmental stressors. Follow that with an alcohol-free, mild toner and use lightweight skin care products as part of your routine. As you start the day, apply a few drops of the AM Sunrise Glow Serum on to your cleansed, dry skin, allowing it to soak in the goodness of Vitamin C, Ashwagandha, and Turmeric (among others) for a radiant, healthy glow that locks in moisture while working to ward off toxins. In the evening, as you get ready for bed, apply a few drops of the PM Sunset Restore Serum on to your cleansed, dry face and massage it into your skin before moving on to an under-eye cream or mask.
